New nonprofit offers shelter and support
Gwen Lewis-Brown, inspired by her own experiences of homelessness, established the nonprofit Destiny Inspired Woman (DIW) to provide transitional housing for individuals and families striving for self-sufficiency. Growing up with four siblings under the care of a single mother, Lewis-Brown faced homelessness multiple times, which fueled her desire to help others in similar situations. After evicting a tenant from one of her rental properties, her husband suggested using the space for the nonprofit, leading to the official launch of DIW in December when it gained 501(c)(3) status. The nonprofit, named in honor of her mother, Dorothy Iona Wilson, offers shelter and support for homeless individuals, helping them achieve goals such as employment and self-reliance.
With community support, particularly from the Wildwood Wildcats Booster Club, DIW has furnished the home and currently houses one tenant who has already secured a job and transportation. Lewis-Brown’s long-term goal is to expand and open additional homes to assist more people in need, ensuring they have the opportunity to build better lives, free from the fear of homelessness.
